Where to Eat in Essex

If you're getting off the Essex Island Ferry on the mainland, walk up the gentle sloping hill about 500 feet to the shops, sights and restaurants of Main Street.

The Griswold Inn

Noah's at 63 Main

Directly up the hill from the Essex Island ferry is the historic Griswold Inn. Tucked along the tree-lined streets of Essex, Connecticut, “The Gris” whisks you back in time from the moment you step upon its creaky wide-plank floors. Directly up the hill from the Essex Island ferry is the historic Griswold Inn. Tucked along the tree-lined streets of Essex, Connecticut, “The Gris” whisks you back in time from the moment you step upon its creaky wide-plank floors. Established in 1776, this iconic inn has been welcoming travelers for nearly 250 years, making it one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the country.

Boaters, neighbors and tourists alike return to the Gris for an authentic pint, a hearty meal, live music or even a weekend stay. Whether you enjoy the taproom or sit among the marine-prints and nautical findings in the dining rooms, you know you are somewhere special.

We are always welcome to bring Ozzy to one of the outdoor tables (weather and time permitting), either just outside the taproom or across the way in the lovely courtyard.

Noah's at 63 Main

At the river end of Main Street in Essex Village, Noah’s at 63 Main offers style, creative cuisine, friendly service, live music and sweeping  views, whether you are in the sumptuous bar, outdoor tables, or on the lawn seating under umbrellas. (That's where you'll typically find us, with Ozzy.) Come for lunch, dinner, brunch, cocktails or take out a tasty meal for your boat.

Drift

Drift is a fresh, casual semi-newcomer to Essex’s waterfront dining selections. Set on Pratt Street adjacent to Safe Harbor Dauntless, Drift creates what its name evokes: oysters, tuna tartare, lobster rolls, and creative small plates designed for sharing. Expect refreshing craft cocktails and colorful views from the deck (where Ozzy and friends are welcome!).

A fresh and creative restaurant, Siren Kitchen & Bar, is right on Essex Island, with mostly outdoor seating overlooking the channel. I’m a big fan of their beer battered fish sandwich and spicy margarita.

In the summer season, they’re open noon to 9 PM seven days a week (weather permitting).

If you have a furry friend, note that dogs are not allowed in the restaurant or on the patio at Siren. However, you can often perch at the Adirondack chairs peppered around the vicinity of the restaurant and order food and cocktails to enjoy right there.

Siren doesn’t take reservations, but you can call 860-662-4224 with questions or for take-out orders.
